Overall Study Question
These investigators compared vitamin D to placebo in the prevention of self reported fractures. The vitamin D or placebo was mailed to the each participant every 4 months and the incidence of self reported fractures was assessed.
2686 men and women living in the general community. Their mean age was 74, 24% were men. Thirty one percent of of the men had a history of cardiovascular disease while this was present on only 18% of the women.
Patients were randomized in a blinded fashion to receive either vitamin D 100,000 IU orally every four months or placebo.
The mean duration of follow up was 5 years.
How does this study contribute to the drug therapy of fracture prevention?
This study suggests that vitamin D at a dose of 100,000 IU orally every 4 months reduces the chance of fractures in men and women between the ages of 65-65 living in the general community regardless of bone density.
