Residency Training Program

Fausto Vinces, D.O., Program Director, Osteopathic General Surgery Residency Program

Lutheran’s General Surgery residency program gives residents meaningful responsibility that increases with each level of academic training and professional growth. Throughout their training, residents are actively involved with patient-care decisions as well as the supervision of junior residents and medical students. The four-year curriculum is designed to provide cognitive, psychomotor and affective objectives for general surgery training and offers residents the opportunity to acquire a broad understanding of general surgical principles and to foster appropriate technical and motor skills.

General Surgery residents complete one-month block rotations in general surgery, anesthesia, intensive care, orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, thoracic surgery, trauma and subspecialty electives. As surgical residents progress throughout their training, they have the opportunity to demonstrate increasing competence in general surgery procedures and techniques, becoming exposed to the vast scope of general surgical practice in the following areas: skin and soft tissue; diseases of the head and neck, gastrointestinal tract and other abdominal viscera, pancreatobiliary tract, breast, abdominal wall, endocrine system, and vascular system; as well as trauma and emergency surgery, surgical critical care, gynecological surgery, endoscopy, urological surgery, thoracic surgery and pediatric surgery.

As a Level One Trauma Center, the medical center also offers residents the opportunity to be part of an integrated team of multi-specialists who take care of patients who have multiple injuries. The trauma surgery rotation includes experience in neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, thoracic surgery, ENT and plastic surgery.

Lutheran residents enhance their scholarship skills through participation in clinical discussions, conferences, Journal Club, teaching and management rounds. Our faculty members welcome residents’ participation in clinical research, and all residents are encouraged to engage in investigative projects throughout their training at Lutheran.
