Pack a picnic and hike up Talcott Mountain State Park, Simsbury, Rte. 185. Climb the tower for a panoramic view! Then go west to Route 10 and north to see three centuries of history at the Phelps tavern Museum and Homestead. Stay overnight in one of the town’s historic inn or B&B. Then it’s off to Flamig Farm in West Simsbury where you’ll find a petting zoo and hay, sleigh or pony rides. Stop by Tulmeadow Farm on Rte. 309 for some fresh, farm-made ice cream before you head back.
Talcott Mountain State Park
Extensive vista in all directions from 165-foot Heublein Tower, former summer home of prominent Hartford family. Museum of local history. 1.5 mile hike to tower and picnic area.
Phelps Tavern Museum & Homestead
Period rooms and interactive exhibition galleries illustrate the use of the historic Capt. Elisha Phelps house as an inn from 1786 to 1849. Two-acre complex includes museum store, research library, period gardens.
Farm animal petting zoo (Apr.-Nov.). Horse-drawn hay, sleigh, carriage and pony rides, year-round, weather permitting.
